Anthony Luis Sanchez Cruz (b. 1988)
Anthony Luis Sanchez Cruz is a musicologist, independent researcher, and composer. He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Composition from the University of Georgia. As a musicologist and educator, Dr. Sanchez Cruz concentrates on addressing aspects of Afro-Latin American and Caribbean musical identity and history in relation to the theory of transculturation. He has also traveled extensively, conducting research on Puerto Rican folkloric musical instruments and genres. He has appeared on the Tiempo de Nuevos Aires radio program from Argentina (2021) and has lectured at the 2022 Slave Dwelling Project Conference in Charleston, SC. He also previously presented at the 2020 and 2022 IGGAD symposia. Dr. Sanchez Cruz has additionally written chamber music for the Chicago Cuatro Orchestra Project and for programs like the Canadian podcast drama series Sticks Shift Incorporated (2020-Present). In June 2018, Dr. Sanchez lectured at the Isabela Tango Fest, presenting his book The Jíbaro and the Gaucho United in Music and Song: an investigation of the transcultural link between Argentine and Puerto Rican folk music. His latest book From Ring Shout to Bomba:Ethnographic Perceptions and Approaches to Music and Religion in the Gullah/Geechee and Afro-Latin Diasporas, was published in 2022.
